12th September - Chi Walking Experience Day (Adults only)

Chi Walking is a path to lifelong health and fitness. Learn to focus your mind and body and begin your mindful journey towards a more enjoyable way to exercise. Your learning will move through the following areas: - Posture - use your bodies structure, not muscles for support and stability - Ankle Lift - remember, a relaxed muscle will not get injure Lead from your centre of mass and develop balance between upper and lower body - Arm Swing - relax and provide directional alignment - Walking at different speeds and on hills - vary stride length and cadence. How to develop Chi Walking as a mindful practice through the 5 Mindful Steps. The morning event will be a focused workshop on the Chi Walking technique. In the afternoon there will be three separate focus walks to apply your learning: A fitness walk, a hilly walk, and calming walking meditation to end the day. This all takes place in the stunning scenery of the Peak District National Park. This mainly outdoor workshop also includes: - 6 hours of teaching with a Certified Chi Running and Chi Walking instructor - video observations during the day with oral feedback - A range of practical exercises that you can work on after the day - Lunch - Learn outdoors in the stunning scenery of the Peak District National Park - Follow up your learning with mindful walks and runs with a Chi Running focus.

This is a guided evening walk learning some tips and tricks to help navigate in the dark or other limited visibility conditions. We will be out for about 2.5 hours but will not be covering very great distances, this is more about learning techniques safely. Come prepared with OL21 Explorer map, compass and head torch. price £10 per person. Booking essential. Payment must be received within 1 week of booking.

Did you know a Neolithic stone arrow head was found on Crompton Moor? Walk in this wilderness, listen to Dr Mike Nevell's tales of his archaeological investigations. Nordic Walking poles are loaned freely and use of walking poles is optional. Walkers are offered a lift at 11am from Dunwood Park to the start of the walk at Brushes Clough Car Park on Crompton Moor if required. Come along and join us as we celebrate Burnley's heritage, countryside and woodlands. There is so much to see and do, watch the woodcarvers and chainsaw sculptors in action; learn how to make your own bird box; see the rescued hedgehogs and the beautiful birds of prey; learn the art of bushcraft; become a archery champion; meet the horses from HAPPA, enjoy the mini farmers market for special treats; see the historic vehicle cavalcade and join the guided walks through the park and woodland. The Sealed Knot will be in their military encampment and at skirmish in front of the hall. Take a close look at the weapons and uniforms, find out about the lifestyle of the camp followers and hear the muskets firing over the crowds as they practice their drill. Inside the hall costumed guides will show you around some of the secret places and the local history museum will give you a glimpse of times gone by.

20 mile moorland walk (at a reasonably quick pace), traversing Hoar Edge, Great Manshead Hill, Withens Gate, Gaddings Dam and Long Causeway. Tracks from medieval times, from the 19th century and recent access paths. Hoping for some great views!

GPS Training This course will primarily focus on gaining an understanding of the characterisitcs and use of a basic hand held GPS. At the the end of the course participants will have gained more knowledge, skills and be confident about the use of GPS receivers, and be able to use a GPS receiver to its maximum advantage for other navigational skills. This course will look at the basic functions of the GPS device. However, there will be an opportunity to discuss other GPS receivers which have a range of functions. The day will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor practical exercises in the locality of the West Pennine Moors. The course will look at the following: An overview of the GPS system and how it works including acquiring satellite signals Setting up the GPS receiver for use at home or abroad, main function buttons and accessories Main menu pages, navigation, map, trip and computer. Inputting waypoints and routes. Finding locations using the "GoTo" function by the introduction of geocaching. Setting and using the trip computer and Track log as a checking aid. Navigating a pre designated route with your GPS. Cost of course : £70 per person

26th September - Stanza Stone Poetry Trail : Day 1

The Stanza Stone Poetry Trail is a 47 miles trail from Marsden to Ilkley through dramatic watershed landscape linking six poems by Simon Armitage, carved by Pip Hall in atmospheric and dramatic locations. This 18.5 mile guided walk from Marsden to Hebden Bridge takes us past two of the poems on day one of the three day trail. It is a strenuous and satisfying walk, arriving in Hebden Bridge by 7pm. Price: £20 per person. Booking is essential. Payment must be received within 1 week of booking. The walk ends at Hebden Bridge Railway Station. Trains returning to the start of the walk at Marsden Railway Station are at 19:09 and 20:09, take 1h 18m with 2 changes. Please check prior to booking and make your own arrangements.
