Welcome to the event listings for the 2017 South Pennine Walk and Ride Festival. As we have so many events in 2017 we've introduced a new feature - you can now search the listings by activity, or by Local Authority area, using the filters on the right of the page. Then click on the event of your choice to get full details about start times and locations.

Updates

Due to the pocket guide going to print in July sometimes events have to change for the actual festival due to circumstances beyond our control. Please check the Walk and Ride Festival website for up to date advice.

EVENT 114: In the Footsteps of Outlaws and Legionaries-incorrect postcode in pocket guide. Event will meet at Ogden Reservoir, Ogden Lane, Newhey, OL16 3TQ. We are trying to secure a walk leader to meet at Ogden Reservoir, Halifax as an alternative but have nothing sorted as yet.

09th September - Fungi Foray

Explore the fascinating world of fungi and discover some of the rarer species on this foray through the woodland. Cost £7 adult, £4 child, maximum 25 people so please book early.

Come and chat to local Heart of the Pennines experts on walking in the area. Opportunity for people to buy walking leaflets on abundant walks with over 60 available walking routes for purchase. Information tying the history together is available through Pennine Prospects in-depth publications on the South Pennines.

09th September - Guided walk using 906 Bus Midgehole to Gibson Mill and back.

Start Time: 10:30
This circular walk takes you through the delightful wooded valley of Hardcastle Crags, wandering up and down boulders and stone steps along a riverside path, with the added attraction of visiting Gibson Mill. Gibson Mill is the National Trust flagship sustainable property with the Weaving Shed café where you can get a free coffee with your bus ticket. Head back through a slightly higher woodland trail, the old mill walk, to reach the bus stop to catch the 906.

09th September - Guided walk using 906 Bus Widdop Gate to Gibson Mill and back to Clough hole.

This is a short walk mainly in woodland and partly following the route of an old railway line used to build local reservoirs. It starts with steep steps down and then follows the railway line, after which you then head down hill and follow the river down stream. Arriving at the mill pond continuing down to Gibson Mill. Gibson Mill is a National Trust property with facilities and refreshments available at the Weaving Shed café. From here you can then head back up the hill up the stone steps to end at the Clough Hole car park, catching the 906 bus back. At Gibson Mill there is an option here to add a mile onto the walk following a wide track that contours along through woodland to Midgehole.

As part of Heritage Open Day and Halifax Heritage Festival, take part in a unique heritage themed photo walk with award winning Yorkshire photographer Rich Bunce. Looking at the immediate environment in a creative way you will discover the hidden details of the world around you. This is accessible to people with any kind of camera including smartphones and tablets. It will include practical ways to enhance your photography and different composition techniques.

The midnight walk is a family/dog-friendly fundraising event for Overgate Hospice. Both routes are moderate, roadside walks with some hills. Registration starts at 10:30 pm but walk starts at midnight.£14 per individual or £60 for a team of 5.

A guided walk with Pendle and South Pennines Area Walkers up a secluded valley to Stoodley Pike, Langfield and Gaddings Dam beach and past the Basin Stone. Stop at Shepherds Rest and back along Rochdale canal. Wear suitable walking gear and refreshments.

10th September - Todmorden Open Studios Trail

Todmorden Open Studios is a self-guided walking trail using brochure and trail map. It can be done as a gentle afternoon stroll to visit local artists studios and art work on display in cafes and bars around the town centre or as a longer walk/bus ride to visit outlying artists studios. See brochure for venues offering disabled access. Not suitable for dogs. Trail is also running on 9th and 11th September. Take as long or as little time as you like exploring our local artists studios and their work.

10th September - Halifax Music Heritage Trail

Start Time: 14:00
A guided tour of the Halifax Music Heritage Trail. You will hear about the fascinating and surprising music history of Halifax from the mid-1950s onwards. Expect to hear tales of Shirley Bassey, Donovan, The Kinks, Pulp, The Jacksons, John Grant and many more as we visit many of the venues of yesteryear.

This is a circular heritage walk that visits Crimsworth Dean and Midgley Moor. It follows ancient packhorse tracks and visits wayside crosses, packhorse bridges, manorial boundary markers and milestones. Some of the paths are steep and rough and can be boggy.

13th September - Colden, Clough Head and Hebden Dale

The Calderdale and Pennine Ways to Clough Head then down to the old railway line to Gibson Mill, Hebden Dale and Heptonstall with Pendle and South Pennine Area Walkers. Refreshments available en-route.

Circular walk from Todmorden via Gaddings Dam with some uphill sections and stiles. Suitable for experienced walkers. No dogs or children please.

13th September - The Waters of Ryburne and Rishworth from the 901 bus

Start Time: 10:00
This circular walk is very varied, including riverside walks, upland farmland and high moorland. Much of the walk is on good paths and farm tracks but the high moorland is uneven in places so good boots are recommended. There are several stiles and a gate on the walk. There are no facilities on route but there are facilities and the beginning and end.

Guided walk with CREW (Cardiac Rehabilitation through Exercise and Walking) on gentle inclines, stony tracks, stiles and a ford. There are animals and old buildings en-route. Dogs on leads welcome. Not suitable for children under 12 or for people with mobility issues.

A challenging day’s walk at a brisk pace experiencing the finest woodland landscapes of the Calder Valley and involving 4700 feet of ascent. Some rough and uneven paths – suitable for experienced walkers and those ready for a challenge.

A family walk with great views of the area taking in a hamlet, some traditional houses , one of which was the home of Lavena Saltonstall from a family of fustian dyers who became a leading suffragette. Dogs on leads welcome.

Come and see the calder Valley search and rescue Team train their dogs and talk about how to keep safe out in the South Pennines. There will be an easy, family and dog friendly walk with Calderdale Ramblers giving panoramic views of Cragg Vale and Stoodley Pike, before returning to Craggies Café and Farm Shop for refreshments.

15th September - The Bride and The Cross

A walk on the east side of the valley above Todmorden with curious stone formations, a lovely waterfall and an ancient royal cross and superb views with Norman Mitchell. Bring suitable walking equipment and refreshments.

Scenic walk up out of the valley bottom exploring Cornholmes textile past on well defined tracks , some uneven ground, several stiles and steep drops. Dogs welcome on leads . Not suitable for children under 10 yrs and must be supervised by an adult. 592/589 bus alight at Waggon and Horses. Walking boots and waterproofs essential.

Would you like to try some extreme mountain biking in the Upper Calder Valley? Havok Bike Park provides purpose built mountain bike trails that twist through the pines of Cock Hill Woods, starting at Red graded (Advanced) right the way up to Orange bike park graded trails that cater for elite level riders. If you are a competent mountain biker with your own bike and a helmet come and see what it’s all about. Limited parking on site with the entrance road passing through a farmer’s field with gates wither side. We look forward to seeing you on the hill.

Up to open moorland and the iconic Bridestone. Some steep ascents/descents; tracks, causey paths and stiles. Moderate but strenuous in parts. Bring good footwear/warm clothing/drink and snacks.

16th September - Fawcett200 at Luddenden

Start Time: 13:30
Tour of Peel House and the site and remains of 2 nearby mills, including Peel House Mills with explanation of the Fawcett family’s involvement of the development of the mill. The afternoon will be dog/family friendly. If a volunteer with a car is available to take people who may have problems with steep terrain to meet in the bottom of the valley, then the tour of the former mill sites would become a gentle walk.

17th September - Delph Donkey Ride

This moderate paced (10-12mph) road ride starts in Halifax and heads out towards Rishworth, where we stop for coffee. We continue towards Delph crossing the M62 at its highest point near Windy Hill, giving panoramic views of the South Pennines and beyond. The ride will take in a section of the disused railway line, known as the Delph Donkey, before stopping for lunch. We will return to Halifax via Buckstones or Milnrow, depending upon time and weather conditions. This ride includes some long gradients and descents, making it suitable for reasonably fit cyclists.

A walk with Rochdale Ramblers tracing part of the Calderdale Way to Great Bride Stones - a gathering of weathered gritstone rocks with spectacular shapes and sizes. Well established paths, some steep gradients, not advisable for young children.

17th September - Nutclough, Old Town, Wadsworth Moor and Birchcliffe

A scenic walk up to the tops above Hebden Bridge, aiming for the summit at High Brown Knoll. Return trip ends at Hebden Bridge Hostel (Birchcliffe) where tea & cake will be served. Bring packed lunch and stout footwear. Donations for refershments welcomed.

Follows some of Calderdale Way with the Hebden Bridge History Society using footpaths and farm tracks. Option of additional 3 mile canal walk from Brearley to Hope Chapel. Bring lunch. Walking shoes recommended. In wet weather there may be some muddy sections.

22nd September - Todmorden Tops and the Fielden Dynasty

One of 13 e-trails devised by Pennine Horizons to illustrate the history of the area downloadable to a smart phone. Enjoy the history and landscape forged by nature and the Fielden dynasty. Two long, continuous steep climbs onto the hills and one short stretch with exposure to a long drop at the side of the hill. Walking over stiles, on farm tracks, lanes, open fields and moorland where it can be wet and boggy.

Wheelchair-friendly. A slow, circular walk with slight gradients on tarmac with stops for you to use your imagination as Diana, from Hebden Bridge History Society, describes Hebden Bridge between 1777 and 1817.

24th September - Cragg Climb

Cragg15 is a community group that formed to continue the impact and enjoyment from the Tour de France racing through Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale in July 2014. Since its formation, numerous events on the longest continuous climb in England have been considered, but to recreate the TdF experience – and more importantly – create the opportunity for some iconic and safe events – a road closure was needed. Now, after years of planning, the application for a road closure is being granted, and on Sunday 24th September 2017 there will be the very first ‘Cragg Challenge’ – a festival of running and cycling that it’s hoped will provide the core of a marvellous day for the participants and the whole community. All events will take place on Cragg Road (B6138) with a start/finish line in Mytholmroyd. Registration will be at Mytholmroyd Community Centre – times for each event given separately – see the discrete event information for registration and start times on the website www.cragg15.uk
