Welcome to the event listings for the 2017 South Pennine Walk and Ride Festival. As we have so many events in 2017 we've introduced a new feature - you can now search the listings by activity, or by Local Authority area, using the filters on the right of the page. Then click on the event of your choice to get full details about start times and locations.

Updates

Due to the pocket guide going to print in July sometimes events have to change for the actual festival due to circumstances beyond our control. Please check the Walk and Ride Festival website for up to date advice.

EVENT 72: Mary Towneley Loop Endurance-Unfortunately this year’s event has had to be cancelled due to the low number of entries received so far. Refunds for the current entrants will be processed ASAP.  Any questions please email: events@rpmrt.org.uk 



EVENT 114: In the Footsteps of Outlaws and Legionaries-incorrect postcode in pocket guide. Event will meet at Ogden Reservoir, Ogden Lane, Newhey, OL16 3TQ. We are trying to secure a walk leader to meet at Ogden Reservoir, Halifax as an alternative but have nothing sorted as yet.

The course will equip people with the required skills to lead/supervise cycle rides with theory and practical training including route planning, risk assessments plus more. You need to be a competent cyclist to take part. Bring a bike (although one may be provided for you on request) and suitable clothes for riding.

A gentle, mainly off-road, exploration of the Saddleworth countryside with members of the Rough Stuff Fellowship Off-Road Cycling Club (www.rsf.org.uk). Suitable for beginners. Morning ride starts at 10.30am. Afternoon ride starts at 1.30pm. If riding with us all day lunch will be back at the Lime Kiln Cafe. Expect to be back from the afternoon ride around 4pm. 14th September - Easy Riders Ride

Start Time: 10:30
An easy, slow paced ride for people who don’t want to cycle on roads. There will be short gradients; a rest will be incorporated into the ride at the top of each hill. Starting at Thompson Park we will follow the scenic Brun Valley route, come and hear the birds sing, spot wildflowers along the beautiful route. Who knows, we may event see the heron on the river Brun. If raining the session will be cancelled. Book, limited places available Bring your own bike.

Would you like to try some extreme mountain biking in the Upper Calder Valley? Havok Bike Park provides purpose built mountain bike trails that twist through the pines of Cock Hill Woods, starting at Red graded (Advanced) right the way up to Orange bike park graded trails that cater for elite level riders. If you are a competent mountain biker with your own bike and a helmet come and see what it’s all about. Limited parking on site with the entrance road passing through a farmer’s field with gates wither side. We look forward to seeing you on the hill.

17th September - Delph Donkey Ride

Start Time: 08:45
This moderate paced (10-12mph) road ride starts in Halifax and heads out towards Rishworth, where we stop for coffee. We continue towards Delph crossing the M62 at its highest point near Windy Hill, giving panoramic views of the South Pennines and beyond. The ride will take in a section of the disused railway line, known as the Delph Donkey, before stopping for lunch. We will return to Halifax via Buckstones or Milnrow, depending upon time and weather conditions. This ride includes some long gradients and descents, making it suitable for reasonably fit cyclists.

17th September - Mary Towneley Loop Endurance

Start Time: 09:00
Bridleway loop around Rossendale, Calderdale and Rochdale. With 6300ft of climbing, a variety of surfaces and very little road makes this a genuinely big day out in the saddle. Registration from 8am.

17th September - Bronte MTB Challenge

There are routes suitable for all standards of mountain bike and cyclo-cross rider navigating the stunning and challenging landscapes inspired by writings of the three Bronte sisters. All participants will receive a medal and well-earned complimentary hot meal at the finish. Various costs for different routes, individuals and teams. Additional fundraising for Sue Ryder, Manorlands Hospice.
